Description

Breeding tubes are recommended where ice birds or sand martins cannot dig the tubes themselves. This is, for example, the case with stony steep walls, bank walls, extremely rooted steep slopes or a bank that is too loose. An additional advantage of an artificial nest is that it cannot collapse, which happens with natural nests, resulting in the loss of the entire brood.

The breathable and temperature-regulating concrete prevents the formation of condensation in the breeding area. The underside of the nest box consists of wickerwork that prevents rodents from entering. The breeding space is closed at the top with a lid.

BREEDING BEHAVIOR OF KINGFISHERS
The kingfisher has the habit of carrying out the first and second brood in different tubes, which is why it is advisable to integrate two breeding tubes into the same steep wall. However, the distance must be at least 70 cm between the two pipes.

PLACEMENT
The wind direction does not matter, as the birds are in a nest chamber deep in the bank. Sunlight also has no influence, it remains cool in the nest bowl. Avoid banks subject to strong winds and waves. Not too close to recreational areas, fishing areas, bank exits or boat moorings.
Make sure that the entrance hole is at least 50 cm above the water. The nest end should fall back 10 cm into the bank. There should be at least 25 cm of soil above the nest chamber.

MAINTENANCE
The best time for maintenance is january/february.
