House sparrows ( Passer domesticus ) did very well in the Benelux until a few years ago because there were more hedgerows and many houses still had old roofs with an outdated roof structure. However, due to extensive modernization, there are fewer and fewer suitable breeding sites for this bird today.
A sparrow pole can be placed in the city, the village or in the countryside. For example, house sparrows like gardens with lots of greenery and hedges (privet, ivy), for their safety and for food. When choosing a location, it is important that house sparrows already occur within a radius of no more than 500 m. Sparrows like to seek out others of their own kind, they are social birds.
Typically, not all nesting areas will be used for breeding. Sparrows also occupy some of the nest spaces purely as shelter. It will therefore never be the case that all 30 nests house a breeding pair. Great and blue tits also sometimes use this lift.
