Description:
This assignment involved the bat-friendly installation of the German bunker Schans van Landmolen in Kruibeke, commissioned by Regionaal Landschap Schelde Durme. Existing window and door openings were carefully sealed and equipped with special entrance holeholes for bats. Nesting stones, including the Swaenenbox in wood-concrete, were also installed to provide additional hiding places. Thanks to the use of sustainable materials and adapted facilities, the bunker now forms a stable and safe hibernation site.
In addition, a new bat cellar was built behind the bunker, specially designed as an ideal winter residence. The design took into account airflow, humidity, and temperature. Nesting stones and openings between bricks provide additional hiding places. Thus, both the bunker and cellar are optimized for bats, while preserving the historical value of the site.
