Description:
In the Vrijbroekpark we have given a special piece of Mechelen history a new future! The old hotelruïne from the years ’60, for many years a hidden mystery, was made accessible and safe by Ecovery – and transformed into a unique experience for young and old.
We realized a 185 meter long walking bridge with seating, which winds through the tree crowns and led visitors in a surprising way to the ruïne. Additionally we placed two bridges that connect the different parts of the terrain with each other.
In the ruïne itself we created on the upper floor an observation platform, with a beautiful view over the Vrijbroekpark. On the first floor we installed a boardwalk, so visitors could also safely explore the interior.
The ground floor was converted into an optimal winter roosting place for bats, with adapted facilities that guarantee their rest and protection. Moreover, we placed various fauna facilities in, on, and around the building to strengthen biodiversity in and around the site.
Finally, we developed a scenographic experience route that brought the story of this place to life: a fascinating mix of nature, history, and art. Visitors can discover the fauna that the area is rich in, the intriguing history of the unfinished hotel, and the expressive graffiti that adorns the walls today.
