Kingfisher Wall – sustainable and natural breeding place for kingfisher

The kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) is a colorful, protected birdsspecies known for its fast dives and striking blue plumage. For successful breeding, this species needs steep, stable riverbanks with suitable sandy or loamy substrate. In our densely built-up landscape, such natural conditions are often scarce or lost. An artificial kingfisher wall offers the ideal solution here.

The kingfisher wall from Ecovery is developed with a focus on both ecology and sustainability. The design accurately mimics the natural breeding habitat and provides safe nesting tunnels that perfectly match the needs of the kingfisher. The visible side of the wall is finished in an environmentally friendly color, so that the whole harmoniously blends into the landscape. Behind the wall, there are prefab tunnel elements with or without nesting boxes, which follow the temperature and humidity of the soil – just like in a natural riverbank.

Thanks to the modular structure with tongue and groove connections, the wall can be easily placed and expanded to size. Moreover, it is made of high-quality, durable materials that guarantee a long lifespan and minimal impact on the environment. Thus, with this artificial kingfisher wall, you not only create a safe and reliable breeding site, but also actively contribute to the protection of this iconic species and the restoration of biodiversity along rivers, ponds, and streams.

Also, the safety and naturalness of the breeding biotope under the ground level of the surrounding area where the wall is located is important. Since there is no land in front of the wall, no predators can watch over the nest, and the nest is considered safer and more quickly occupied by kingfishers. The front view of the wall is also free of vegetation to prevent climbing by predators (mustelids!). Laterally, the site is naturally finished with poor suitable fill soil.

Tunnel elements and/or nest boxes are installed in the fill soil. This offers advantages because there is little to no more work on the nest, and thus the chance of multiple broods is increased. Nest boxes also prevent the nest from collapsing or settling in a newly placed kingfisher wall.

On top, the wall remains vegetation-free for a long time because heavy branchwork is stacked and simulates an inverted root system.
A post or a natural heavy branch is placed in front of the wall so that the kingfisher can survey the safety of the nesting environment.
