Description
The stock dove is a species that is often mistaken as a feral or common wood pigeon, but is actually a lot rarer. Just like for other cave breeders, nest boxes can also be used for the stock dove. The nest box for the stock dove can provide an alternative to the old buildings, rabbit holes, old woodpecker holes or other tree cavities where stock doves make their nests.
This species often uses unoccupied owl nest boxes. Jackdaws can also use the nest box. Wood pigeons are very location-based, once they have found a good nesting location they return to the same place every year. If their previous nest boxes are occupied by owls, the pigeon will wait its turn and breed in the nest box when the owls have fledged.
PLACEMENT
In parks, gardens or forest edges, the cabinet can be hung at a height between 2 and 5 meters. Make sure that the entrance hole does not face south or west and the cabinet is not in full sun.
MAINTENANCE
The nest box can be cleaned from early November to February.
