Description
The nesting box for the wheatear provides extra breeding space and the anti-marten plate at the entrance protects the nest against predation. Among other places in France and the Netherlands, nesting boxes for the wheatear have already proven to be a success story.
Throughout Europe, the wheatear is under pressure. It is a species that has been declining strongly since the 1980s, due to among other things predation and a lack of suitable breeding cavities. A nesting box can provide a solution to these two problems.
INSTALLATION
The nest box is placed at the end of winter before the wheatear returns from its migration. Taking into account the wind, the opening is placed to the east or northeast. The nest box is buried in a hill or dune with the opening slightly sloping downwards to prevent rain from entering. It is important to integrate the entrance well into the surroundings, for example by hiding it behind stones, a pile of branches or vegetation. Do not place multiple nest boxes within a radius of 250 meters of each other.
MAINTENANCE
It is important to clean out the nest box after the breeding season. This can be done easily by removing the front with the anti-marten plate.
