Description
Squirrels prefer nests with multiple escape routes, so this nesting box has two entrances. The 'balcony' under the entrances makes it easier to reach the nesting box and is the ideal practice board for the young. One of the sides can be opened to clean the box.
Squirrels usually build multiple nests, so it is recommended to hang at least two boxes to create the ideal nesting environment.
INSTALLATION
Nest boxes for squirrels are hung sheltered in a tree-rich environment at a height between three and five meters. Try to ensure that neither opening is facing southwest. Squirrels find it easier to find good routes to their nest if the box is hung near side branches.
The bottom can be filled with a layer of twigs and dried leaves. To attract squirrels to the nesting box, it can help to place broken hazelnuts inside.
Do not hang squirrel boxes too close to bird nesting boxes that have a large opening, such as the half-open nesting box for the robin. Squirrels love to rob eggs.
MAINTENANCE
It is recommended to clean the nest box één per year in October/November.
