Description
Squirrels prefer nests with multiple escape routes. That's why this nest box has two entrances. The balcony under the entrance makes it easier for the squirrels to reach the nest box and is the ideal training board for youngsters. One of the sides can be opened to clean the cabinet.
Squirrels usually build multiple nests, so it is recommended to install at least two boxes to create the ideal nesting environment.
PLACEMENT
Squirrel houses are sheltered in a tree-lined environment at a height of between three and five meters.
Try to ensure that neither opening faces southwest. Squirrels find it easier to find good routes to their nest if the box is located near side branches. The bottom can be filled with a layer of twigs and dried leaves.
To attract squirrels to the nest box it can help to place broken hazelnuts in the nest box. Do not hang squirrel boxes too close to bird nest boxes that have a large opening, such as the semi-open nest box for the robin. Squirrels love to steal eggs.
MAINTENANCE
It is recommended to clean the nest box once a year in October/November.
