Description
Insect hotels come in many shapes and sizes. Installing an insect hotel can have a very positive impact on the ecosystem of the environment. It gives a boost to insect life in your garden, which attracts more birds and also ensures that many crops, including fruit and vegetables, are well pollinated. The wild flora is also pollinated in this way. The insects also help to control leaf caterpillars and houseflies.
Just like the house martin, the barn swallow is having more and more trouble finding suitable materials to build its nest. Interior spaces of small houses and stables are disappearing more and more often, and the surfaces are becoming increasingly smoother. The most common problems for this species are that they can no longer find a suitable location to build their nest, and even if they do, it often turns out that the loam is of inferior quality, causing the nest to break too early. The proximity of sheep, horses, cows, or pigs attracts swallows. Hence the name barn swallow, they reinforce their nest with, among other things, animal hair and hunt the many mosquitoes they attract. Ensure that there is a space of 4 to 6 cm between the nest and the ceiling. Hanging multiple nests together increases the chance of attracting a full colony.
This tit nest box is particularly suitable for species such as the blue tit, coal tit, crested tit and marsh tit, but sparrows also make use of it gladly. During the winter months, the pot also functions as a hiding place, allowing birds to find shelter outside the breeding season.
For extra accessibility, you can attach a small wooden twig under the opening. This helps the birds land and enter the nest box.
