Description
The nest box for the little owl provides an ideal nesting environment. Little owls naturally nest in cavities in old pollard and fruit trees. The raw wood of the nest box mimics this situation as closely as possible. A built-in porch offers a sheltered balcony where little owls like to look out. The partition ensures that the box is not accessible for jackdaws, stock doves and martens and that it is dark enough inside for the young.
PLACEMENT
Preferably in pollard willows, fruit trees or oaks. Hang at a height of 2,5 to 5 m, slightly at an angle so that the eggs do not roll forward and precipitation flows away smoothly. Preferably with the opening to the southeast or to the most accessible approach side. Add a bottom layer of 5 cm of sawdust, wood chips or cat litter pellets. Too high a temperature can be fatal for the young, so direct sunlight on the box is best avoided. The exit of the nest box should be close to a branch so that the young can run out.
In addition to trees, the nest box is also suitable for hanging on buildings under the gutter or in old sheds.
