Description
The nest box for the tawny owl can be placed in the forest, on the edge of the forest or in parks and gardens with a high density of trees.
The rough wood of the large box ensures that the youngsters can climb out quickly. In winter, many birds use the nest box as a shelter. While jays, jackdaws and wood pigeons may also inhabit this nest box, a tawny owl will claim it when he finds it suitable.
PLACEMENT
The nest box is hung at a height of 4 to 8 m in a sheltered place, out of sunlight, with the opening away from driving rain. This is very important, because the large entrance hole allows a lot of water to enter the nest box. The location is carefully chosen taking into account sufficient access opportunities for the large owl. It is best to apply a thick layer of thin twigs to the bottom.
MAINTENANCE
Tawny owls start looking for a nest early, so clean the nest box before December. October and November are the most suitable months. Remove all material in the nest box and place new nesting material.
