Description
The stock dove is a species often mistakenly considered to be a city or wood pigeon, but is actually much rarer. Just like for all other cavity-nesting birds, nesting boxes can also be hung for this species. The nesting box for the stock dove can provide an alternative to old buildings, rabbit holes, old woodpecker holes or other tree cavities where stock doves make their nests.
This species often uses unoccupied nesting boxes for owls. Jackdaws can also use the nesting box. Stock doves are very loyal to their location, once they have found a good nesting location, they return to the same place every year. If their previous nesting boxes are occupied by owls, the dove waits its turn and breeds in the nesting box when the owls have flown out.
