Description

INSTALLATION
Place the nest basket in a sturdy fork of a tree with a free flight path. Fill the nest about halfway with small twigs, forest soil or leaves and ensure that the nest is firmly attached to the tree.

For the tawny owl the nest is placed at a height of 4m in conifers. These provide the most shelter. They breed at forest edges, in parks or large gardens near open landscapes

For the hobby the nest is usually placed in tall poplars at a minimum height of 10 meters. Hobbies use the same breeding site for many years in a row. It may take some time before one settles on the nest, but once a pair is established, they will return. For the hobby, the nest can also be mounted on high-voltage pylons

MAINTENANCE
Annually, in autumn, the nest can be checked for stability and branch material can be added if necessary
