Description
The smallest possible floating artificial nest is that of a grebe. It is built up from a floating circle with a diameter of 50cm. It is, as it were, a buoy that is filled with a high stack of branch material. The nest can also be occupied by coots.
This artificial raft can be used to help grebes in urban areas. In places with steep banks or a lack of bank vegetation, a grebe can have difficulty building its nest. It is precisely these places where a grebe would be least susceptible to predation. If this nest is placed on bodies of water with steep banks or in an urban area, the chance of a fox reaching it is already much smaller. In natural biotopes, an artificial grebe nest is unnecessary. There, the species finds the right methods and materials to build its own nest.
