Description

The European hornet is a useful insect that is already protected in many countries. They play an important role as a natural enemy in controlling pest species such as flies, wasps and caterpillars. The species is increasingly experiencing difficulties in building a nest due to the disappearance of natural cavities. As a result, they are increasingly found in nesting boxes for birds or, for example, in the attics of houses.

In addition to providing nesting opportunities, the hornet nesting box is also used to relocate colonies that cause nuisance.
The woodwork inside is designed for a more stable grip for the nests with horizontal slats and a nesting rod. Due to the opening at the bottom, moisture and excrement will not remain in the nesting box. In addition, this opening also contributes to healthy ventilation of the interior.
Both holes at the front have their own function. Initially, the upper flight opening is used so that the nest is easily accessible for faster construction. At a later stage, this hole is closed by the hornets and the lower opening becomes the entrance hole.

PLACEMENT
Because hornets are territorial animals, various nest boxes are hung at least 100 meters apart. This can be done both at the edge of a forest and on a building at a minimum height of 4 meters. Hornets are sensitive to vibrations, therefore it is extremely important to hang the box as stably as possible. Also take into account a free approach route in a warm, sheltered location and with the opening facing southeast. Ideally the nest box ’s morning sunlight and shade in the afternoon.

MAINTENANCE
During the cleaning that takes place at the end of April, old nests are largely removed. Small remnants that remain in the nest box attract new hornet queens. When hanging a new nest box, the chances are also increased if remnants of old nests are placed in it. If a used nest box is not cleaned, the old nest blocks the access of the entrance hole for new queens.
Hornets will already leave the nest during the summer, but used nests offer overwintering opportunities to other beneficial insects such as lacewings. Therefore, it is recommended to clean the box only at the end of April, just before the hornet season.
