Description
Just like other nesting boxes, a butterfly box is only useful if there are butterflies in the vicinity. Equally important is making the surroundings suitable by integrating native nectar plants for butterflies and host plants for caterpillars. It is a major plus to introduce variation in plant species in such a way that the longest possible flowering period is offered. Also, ensure a varied planting with both low and high protruding species and leave fallen fruit lying. Butterflies also contribute to the pollination of plants in the vicinity.
INSTALLATION
For butterflies, it is very important that the house hangs in a sheltered spot with the entrance facing east. Butterflies use the nesting box to get through the winter and as a hiding place on wet, cold summer days. In ideal circumstances, they go in search of a warm resting place where it is not windy and where it cannot rain. Make sure the box is also hung in a sunny spot.
Straightening a few thin twigs in the house ensures that the butterflies have an easy grip while they rest.
MAINTENANCE
Cleaning out the nesting box is not necessary since butterflies do not really use it as a breeding ground but as a hiding place and hibernation site.
