Description
If you place the box specifically for the pied flycatcher, it is a top priority to keep titmice out. This can be done by closing the entrance hole until mid-April. This way, the nest box is not occupied when the bird returns from its migration to Africa. Pied flycatchers have a lower weight and are no match for titmice. The stronger coal tit directly attacks the eggs and young and is therefore the biggest competitor.
INSTALLATION
Titmice do not like too high temperatures, so do not hang the box in full sun. The direction is not of utmost importance, but in open areas it is best to have the opening to the east.
Titmice are often the victim of cats, so hang the box at least 2m high. If you hang the nesting box in a tree, you can also protect it with a marten and cat ring.
Different titmouse boxes are best hung at least 30m apart.
MAINTENANCE
It is recommended to clean this box annually in winter.
